This Saturday, let’s talk about that old Windows 10 PC sitting in the corner of the office, or on the kitchen desk at home.

Microsoft says Windows 10 reached end of support on Oct. 14, 2025. That was a year ago this month. If you haven’t decided what to do with your old Windows 10 PC yet, you’re not alone, and there’s no panic here.

Below are a few small items to read over your mug. The last one is something you can try this weekend in just a few minutes.

A tip: find out if it can run Windows 11

Start with the simple question. Can this computer be upgraded to Windows 11?

Many older PCs can’t. Windows 11 asks more of the hardware than Windows 10 did. If yours passes, the upgrade is the easiest path, and you keep the computer you already know.

The quickest check is the Windows Update page in Settings. It will usually tell you whether your PC is eligible. If it says no, that’s useful to know. It means you’re choosing between paying to extend Windows 10 or replacing the machine.

Already upgrading? We wrote a friendly walkthrough on safely moving your Windows 10 profile to Windows 11. It covers your files and settings.

Did you know: there’s a paid bridge

Microsoft offers something called Extended Security Updates, or ESU. It’s a paid program that keeps sending security fixes to Windows 10 PCs after support ended. Think of it as a bridge, not a destination.

Here’s what Microsoft’s ESU page says about it:

It’s a yearly subscription.

The PC must be running Windows 10, version 22H2.

It covers security updates only. No new features.

The price doubles each year, for a maximum of three years.

General support for Windows 10 isn’t provided. Microsoft says ESU only covers things like activation and installing the ESU itself.

So the bridge buys you time. It gets more expensive the longer you stay on it, and it ends. For a PC you plan to retire soon, it can make sense. For a PC you hope to use for years to come, it probably doesn’t.

A tool: Windows Backup

Before you change anything, protect your files. Microsoft says Windows Backup can save your files, settings and apps, then restore them on a new Windows 11 device. That makes moving to a new computer a lot less stressful.

A few honest notes. A built-in tool is a good start, but it isn’t the same as a proper off-site backup that someone tests. If this PC holds business records, customer records or years of family photos, make sure a second copy lives somewhere else. We cover that on our backup and disaster recovery page.

Microsoft also lists a Windows 11 security feature called Smart App Control. It only allows apps with good reputations to be installed. Microsoft’s comparison says it’s available on Windows 11 and not on Windows 10. It’s one small example of why staying current helps.

Try this: sort your old Windows 10 PC

Here’s the weekend project. Walk around and find every Windows 10 computer you own. Then put each one in a bucket.

Upgrade. It can run Windows 11. Back it up, then upgrade.

Bridge. It can’t upgrade, but you need it for a while. Consider ESU, and set a replacement date.

Replace. It’s slow, old, and can’t upgrade. Plan the swap, back up the files, and retire it.

Write the buckets on a sticky note. That’s it. A plan on paper beats a vague worry every time.

If a PC lands in the replace bucket, Microsoft’s page points to trade-in offers and Microsoft-approved recycling programs. Please don’t toss old computers in the trash. They hold your data. Wipe them or have someone wipe them properly first.

A quick word for offices. Once a PC is past its support date, updates matter even more, and so does having someone watching for trouble. Our earlier post on locking down Windows 11 is a good next step for the machines you keep.

What to do this week

Make a list of every Windows 10 computer at home or in the office. Note who uses each one.

Check Windows Update in Settings on each one to see if it can upgrade to Windows 11.

Sort each PC into upgrade, bridge or replace, and pick a rough date for each.

Confirm your important files are saved somewhere other than that PC.

This weekend: pick your oldest PC and run through the sorting exercise. A few minutes is plenty.

If you’d like a second pair of eyes, we’re glad to help.
