If you have ever read Byte Into Tech, you may have seen a lot of Mt. Rainier lately. A pink dawn one morning, a foggy valley the next, a sky full of meteors at 2 AM. None of it is stock art, and none of it repeats. We paint each sky ourselves, for one place and one moment: the time the post is published.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This post shows how that works, and puts some of our favorite skies on their own, without the headlines on top, so you can see them properly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One mountain, five places to stand<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Every card is painted from one of five real spots around the mountain: Paradise<\/strong> and Sunrise<\/strong> on its flanks, Tipsoo Lake<\/strong> by Chinook Pass, Gobblers Knob<\/strong> to the west, and Orting<\/strong>, our home town, down in the valley. The ridgelines are traced from public elevation data, so the shapes and proportions are what you would see from that location.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The real sky for that minute<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The sky follows where the Sun actually is at that moment, so the colors move through dawn, golden hour, midday, sunset, blue hour and night. After dark the stars are in their real places, the Moon shows only the part that is lit, and bright planets like Jupiter and Saturn appear where they really are.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then comes the weather. We use the forecast from MET Norway<\/a> for that exact spot and time, and the clouds are painted by type: puffy cumulus, thin streaks of cirrus, a mackerel sky, a low gray deck. Fog settles into the valleys. Rain, snow and thunderstorms show up when they are forecast, and a rainbow appears when the Sun is behind you after a shower. On a clear, dark night you get the Milky Way, meteors when a shower is active, and the northern lights when space weather is strong enough, using NOAA’s Kp index.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Shortly before a post goes out, its card is painted again from the newest forecast. That way the sky on the card matches the sky outside as closely as we can get it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Read the line under the picture<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Each card carries a small credit line: the place, the time, the weather, and anything special in the sky. When a card says Orionid meteor shower (peak)<\/em> or Jupiter + Mars<\/em>, that is what was overhead at that moment. If a sky has no forecast behind it, the card says nothing about the weather.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A few skies to show off<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

We asked the engine to look ahead two months for moments when the sky over the mountain is doing something special, and painted them now. In each one the Moon, the planets, the meteors and the halo are real for that exact minute: where they sit, how much of the Moon is lit, which shower is active. The weather is an example, because no forecast reaches that far yet. The caption under each picture says what is in it. Tap or click any of them to see it full size.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A few highlights: the full Hunter’s Moon on 26 October inside a 22\u00b0 halo, the ring that thin, icy cloud makes around the Moon. Jupiter and Mars side by side near the Moon at midnight on 30 November. Geminid meteors falling past the same pair on 13 December. The last three are example skies of a thunderstorm, a rainbow, and the northern lights of 10 October 2024, when the aurora really was seen over Rainier.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Why an IT company does this<\/h2>\n\n\n\n
